The Kurdistan Region currently hosts more than 1 million of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and refugees; 787,705 IDPs and 264,720 Syrian refugees.
A UN delegation headed by Mrs. Cecilia Jimenez-Damary, the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights for the Internally Displaced Persons and accompanied delegation visited the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC).
Both sides exchanged views on the current situation and the ways forward to help the IDPs and finding synergies to support the IDPs, refugees and the return process and stabilization.
The current security developments, the level of destruction of the public and private properties and civic infrastructures in the liberated areas, as well as the lack of funding and clear strategy do not seem encouraging at all for the IDPs and refugees to go back to their homes in the near future. Therefore, there is an immediate need to focus on the resilience of the IDPs, refugees and host communities.
